Classical Architecture
Classical architecture as we know it today is commonly
associated with the great architectural master pieces of Ancient Rome and Ancient
Greece. This are specifically characterized in its range of conventional forms,
Greek architecture can be characterized in three orders; the Doric Oder, The
Ionic Order and The Corinthian Order. Each of these leaving an impact an
influencing the architectural styles on Western architecture in latter periods
of time. The Ionic Order coexisted with the Doric order and was favored by the
Greek multiple cities. It’s similarly designed to the Doric but slightly more
decorated with stylized ornament and surmounted by horizontal band that scrolls
under to the side. The Corinthian Order grew after the Ionic, with similar
types and proportions its differentiated by its more ornate capitals.
The
Doric Order was developed on mainland Greece, spreading mostly to Italy. This
order is recognized for its capital, The Parthenon. The Parthenon is considered
the most important surviving building of classical Greece. It
is a temple on Athenian Acropolis dedicated to the goddess of War, patron of
Athens, Athena. Most of the architecture in the Parthenon belongs to the Doric
Order, a continuous sculptured frieze in low relief that sits above the
architrave belongs to the Ionic style.
The Greek Pantheon is a temple in Acropolis,
Greece dedicated to the goddess Athena. Aside from being one of the most
important historical buildings in the world for its history it is appreciated
for its unique architecture design. After 2,500 years of the Parthenon has overcome
fires, storms, earthquakes and set on fires. All recurring to the in vital
reconstruction due to the danger of the building collapsing. To this day the
restoration team has taken 30 years to study, understand and this antique style
of architecture and repair the building. Italian architecture is heavily influenced
by the Greek Doric Order. Like the Greeks, Italian architecture is divided into
different period. These being: Etruscan, Classic Greek, Ancient Roman, Medieval,
Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque.
Commonly
Greek and Roman architecture is considered classical architecture. It is no lie
that they are beautiful and magnificent pieces of art but there is more to
them. They influenced the actual architecture we see every day and they also
were categorized in three orders. These orders were called the Doric Oder, The
Ionic Order and The Corinthian Order. Each one of them influenced differently
on architecture dividing themselves on different time periods. In other words,
they were evolving with the passing of time.
